Are slash-proof/tamperproof backpacks a smart idea for traveling?
I’m a 24-year-old woman who will be backpacking Europe solo for two months. Safety is a concern of mine, and am wondering if I would benefit from a slash-proof daypack. I’m thinking with this type of backpack, I can keep my money, cards and passport (along with my camera and iPod) in the bag instead of using a money belt. Good idea?

I use one of their day back packs and StashSafe 100 … I only wear my moneybelt when travelling, in town I leave those items in the hotel safe. Some people are too uncomfortable with this idea, I will not debate it , I feel perfectly safe doing this and have never had a problem.

It's always a good idea to have your money, credit cards and passport anywhere but in a backpack. I've been in Mexico at a rooftop restaurant and watched pickpockets work tourists strolling hte Malecon in Puerto Vallarta…..even saw a team walking beside and behind someone wearing a backpack and the guy in back just helped himself to the contents of all the zippered compartments!
You're better off getting something like a vest that has travelers pockets sewn in for your personal stuff. Check out this:

I think they have ready-made clothes and they have pockets that you can sew into your own clothes.
The camera and other stuff are replaceable ….losing your passport and credit cards could evolve into identity theft and the ability of the criminal to find out more about you than could imagine. The crooks on the streets of major cities are now working for organized crime gangs. If you're traveling alone and you're not street-wise, do some research and learn how to look like you're part of a group or what to do to protect yourself.
